San Francisco Bay Area Customer Operations Full Time Employee

Field Application Engineer

At Rapid Robotics, we are passionate about building accessible and affordable robotic automation solutions that address the manufacturing labor crisis. Our mission is to provide manufacturers with a robotic solution that can be deployed against simple tasks in hours rather than weeks and at a fraction of the cost of other automation solutions that require extensive manual programming. Our solution is driven by the belief that every innovation should be purposeful and that the simplest solution is usually the best one. Guided by these principles, we create turnkey robotic work cells to solve our customers’ operational challenges.

At Rapid, everyone has a seat at our table, and we encourage collaboration and sharing ideas. We value mutual respect, innovate with purpose, and, most importantly, put our customers first. These values have helped us build toward becoming the biggest provider of robotics automation solutions.

Founded in 2019, we are a Series B company that has raised $54M in funding. Our headquarters is in San Francisco, California, with an additional office in Novi, Michigan.

Perks of Working At Rapid Robotics

We are proud to offer a comprehensive total rewards package, competitive base salary, ownership in the company, 401k, and health (medical, dental, and vision insurance). Our benefits also provide access to mental healthcare programs and virtual health services.

We offer a flexible work environment and value work-life balance - so our team can focus on what matters most. We have a flexible time-off policy - with one requirement - take time off to rest and recharge! Our company is closed for "Rapid Winter Break," between Christmas and the new year.

We have also created programs to encourage our team to connect and build relationships - "coffee buddies" and employee-led groups (virtual and in-person) like our beloved #furbots Slack channel and Women at Rapid.

About the Role

We're looking for a Field Application Engineer to join our Deployment Team, who will be responsible for helping our manufacturing customers with our robotic work cell's initial setup and ongoing support. This is a hands-on role, where you will be the technical expert on how to deploy our system, and with your expertise, you will help design and set up the system on-site and provide training to the customer.

The setup includes designing the automation flow, laying out the workspace, working with mechanical engineers to design grippers and part fixtures, creating electrical connections to the customers' machines, and using our software to program the robot's behavior. As the primary contact with the customer, your role will be critical to product direction. Your experiences and observations in the field will help determine how features are added to the product.

How You’ll Make An Impact

  • Before the Rapid workcell is deployed, work with the customer to learn about the task, including observing the current process, taking measurements, and getting sample parts, drawings, CAD, and machine documentation.

  • Use simulation/CAD software to design the workcell layout for a specific task, keeping in mind arm reachability and task cycle time.

  • Work with mechanical engineers to design or adapt grippers and part fixtures for the task.

  • Get parts fabricated, and assemble and test them. Make any necessary design modifications, or feed them back to the mechanical engineers.

  • Be on site when Rapid work cell is delivered and assist in unboxing and setup.

  • Set up and test the work cell on the customer task which includes the ability to install, troubleshoot, and maintain control components such as proximity sensors, relays, and vacuum ejectors.

  • Train customers on use of the system.

  • Answer customer emails and phone calls on use of the system.

  • Make service calls to the customer when issues cannot be resolved over the phone.

  • Work with the product and engineering teams to improve both the customer experience as well as the Field Application Engineer experience.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience with manufacturing automation

  • Strong ability to solve technical problems independently

  • Strong interpersonal skills in representing Rapid to customers

  • Experience working with industrial automation

  • Familiarity working with industrial electrical and air, for both power and sensor uses

  • Experience using hand tools for modification and assembly of metal and plastic

  • Ability to support manufacturing hours when required

  • Ability to drive to local customer sites frequently

  • Ability to lift at least 70 lbs

We’re Excited if You Have

  • Experience programming and using industrial robotic arms

  • Experience in mechanical design and SolidWorks

  • Experience with manufacturing process and fixture design

  • Familiarity with coding in any language

  • Experience with manufacturing or robotic work cell simulation software
